Hillel is the name of the father of Abdon, one of Israel's judges. This is also the name of "Hillel the Elder", the head of Sanhedrin ("The Assembly") in the first century C.E. He is the founder of the Beit Hillel ("House of Hillel") tradition, which is paired with the Beit Shammai tradition.
