Nahshon (Nachshon)
נַחְשׁוֹן
Darter ("snake-bird"). A bird who has a long and flexible snake-like neck.
"Nahshon" is the name of a captain of the tribe of Judah. According to the Jewish tradition, he was the first man who entered the Red Sea during the Exodus. Therefore, "Nahshon" is used as an appellation of a brave person who goes first in spite of any danger.
"And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies, and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah." Numbers 2, 3
