According to the Biblical explanation, the name שמעון (Simeon) is related to the verb לשמוע (lishmo'a, "hear").
Simeon was the second son of Jacob and Leah; the tribe of Simeon is called after him.
"And she conceived again, and bare a son, and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also, and she called his name Simeon." Genesis 29, 33
