This course is for

Adult students of all ages (18 and above), whose mother tongue is not Hebrew and do not speak, read or write Hebrew.

Duration

One academic year.

Course structure and goals

The course is equivalent to an Ulpan in Israel.
The classes focus on speaking, reading and writing in Modern Hebrew. Throughout the course students learn the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph Bet) and vowels, and acquire 500 words in Hebrew used in basic conversation on a variety of topics.
The class meets once a week, students must complete homework assignments sent by the teacher after each lesson.

At the end of the course the student will

have a basic vocabulary of 500 words useful to his personal needs.
know how to express basic feelings and emotions.
know how to construct basic sentences in Hebrew.
know how to read short texts.
know how to write short simple sentences.

1It's so Nice to Meet You!This first class is designed to provide you with an introduction to studying over the Internet and to give us the chance to get to know one another; plus, you'll start learning how to introduce yourself in Hebrew and get a head start on learning the Hebrew Aleph Bet.
2I am a Hebrew StudentIn this lesson, you'll start learning some of the introductory rules of Hebrew grammar and we'll get more into the skills involved with initiating a conversation.
3Hi. I'm From America. Where Are You From?This lesson will continue to expand your Hebrew vocabulary with the aim of strengthening your ability to converse. At the end of this lesson, you should be able to conduct a basic Hebrew conversation. You'll also be taught how to answer typical questions that might arise in day to day interactions. By the end of this lesson, you and your teacher will be engaged in your first interactive dialogue.
4I, You, We, Them...In Hebrew, there are ten different personal pronouns. In this lesson, you'll get to know all of them, along with their different uses.
5What's This? Who's There?In Hebrew, every object is assigned a gender, either male or female. In this lesson, you'll learn how to identify an object as either male or female and how to describe them in plural form. As always, we'll continue working on expanding your vocabulary.
6Learning Hebrew in HebrewThe only way to really reach a level where you are comfortable with Hebrew is to immerse yourself in it. This lesson will provide you with the vocabulary words and terms we need so that all future classes will be conducted only in Hebrew. So say goodbye to English during our classes. It's all Hebrew from here!
7The Hebrew VerbIn Hebrew, unlike English and many other languages, verbs are organized into various categories. This lesson will teach you how to identify the different verb categories. After this lesson, you will be able to conjugate every verb in Hebrew and to pronounce them correctly.
8Please, Thank You, Excuse MeIn this lesson, you'll learn how to be polite in Hebrew and how to handle yourself in various situations that require politeness, like ordering a cup of coffee. Even better, we'll teach you how to apologize when you forget to pay for it :).
9NumbersIn this lesson, you will learn the numbers O through 10; you will also learn how to say your phone number in Hebrew and how to request a phone number from information.
10The ClockThis lesson will familiarize you with how to say what time it is in Hebrew and how to plan your daily schedule based on the hours of the day.
11Is There or Is There Not?Here we will learn the words pertaining to existence of items and the special sentence structures that result from using these words. We'll have some fun practicing using some typical restaurant interactions.
12Does Anybody Have a Question?We'll sum up all the questioning words that we've learned so far: Who, What, Where, Where From, Where to, When, Why. We'll head off for an "evening at the movies" in Hebrew.
13Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow and the Days of the WeekWe'll learn how to count in Hebrew, and through dialogue, we'll get to know the days of the week.
14My FamilyWe'll get to know the terms that will allow us to identify and describe the members of our family.
15NicknamesHere we'll learn the grammatical forms in Hebrew for the phrases "I have" and "You can call me___". This lesson is largely grammatical in nature, covering possession issues and will allow for the inclusion and practice of all the vocabulary words that were learned to date.
16My Beautiful HomeDuring this lesson, we'll learn about the items and appliances we have in our homes and start getting acquainted with Hebrew adjectives and their uses (Yes, Hebrew can be a complex language!)
17Just a Bit More Hebrew GrammarIn this lesson we'll practice adapting words for the plural and singular because without perfecting this skill, Hebrew is likely to sound far less pleasant.
18Do I Know You?This lesson will deal with some grammar issues of basic structural words that are unique to Hebrew but are critical in building sentences and conversing.
19Let's Party!In this lesson we'll learn a selection of words that would be used at a Hebrew-speaking party. We'll also learn some words that would be used when getting to the party, with direction words, like: above, below, adjacent to, etc.
20The Human BodyThis lesson will introduce the different parts of the body, as well as adjectives used for describing people.
21Doctor, Can You Help Me?Here we'll learn how to set up a doctor's appointment and how to communicate in Hebrew with the doctor including describing symptoms and how to order the appropriate medicines from the pharmacy.
22What Do You Like?Infinitives (to learn, to read, etc.). In this class we'll learn for the first time how to use infinitives in a sentence and we'll learn many new verbs.
23The Marketplace 1 - VegetablesIsraeli culture thrives on the back and forth negotiations in the marketplace. This lesson will teach you how to engage in conversation on your next trip to the Israeli shuk (marketplace.) You'll learn the sentences and dialogue that will help you get the best deal. We'll also learn a bit of slang that might give you the upper hand during the bargaining process.
24The Marketplace 2 - FruitsIn this lesson we'll be reviewing our knowledge of vegetables and learning about Israel's fruits. We'll "travel" to the market and coffeehouse, all in Hebrew.
25TimeFrom hour to year...We'll learn more about the clock and the names of the months. We'll learn how to answer the question "How old are you?" and some other questions.
26The Weather Today...This lesson will introduce the important words we use to describe the weather and understand the meteorology reports on the news. We'll talk about the seasons of the year. Best of all, we'll get you prepared for those oh so awkward conversations when there's nothing more to talk about except for the weather outside.
27Itamar's DayA daily description of a boy, Itamar. Itamar goes to kindergarten. We'll join him in learning some grammar and more vocabulary.
28In the Clothing StoreThis lesson will teach you some of the words that will help you in the clothing store and in describing the clothes you wear.
29TransportationWhen's the next bus to Jerusalem? When does the train leave for Hertsliya? Taxi!!! In this lesson we'll learn about all the different forms of public transit to help you get around Israel in the best and quickest ways possible.
30A Walking Tour of JerusalemHow do I get to the Western Wall? Where can I find the Knesset? Can you recommend a restaurant in the Old City? This lesson will prepare you for a day trip around Israel's capital.
31A Night Out in the RestaurantWe'll learn how to make an order in a restaurant, how to read a menu, converse with your waiter and even order a special meal. Be-te'avon!
32IsraelThis will serve as a review of previous lessons. You already know Hebrew. Now all you have to do is come visit Israel.
